How to check if your Milk is Adulterated

These days various eatables that we consume are adulterated.

In the following context we will discuss about some simple hacks that would help us distinguish a pure product from an adulterated one.

The following tests are affiliated to fssai (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India).

Test 1: Water in Milk

  • Put a drop of milk on a slanting surface.
  • Pure milk stays at the point or flows slowly leaving a white stain behind.
  • Adulterated milk will flow immediately without leaving any stain.

Test 2: Detergent in Milk

  • Take equal quantities of milk and water.
  • Mix both of them thoroughly.
  • If the milk adulterated will form dense and thick lather.
  • But if the milk is pure then it will form thin layer of foam.

Test 3: Starch (eg. Potato) in Milk and Milk products

  • Boil 2-3ml of milk, khoya, paneer, etc. with 5ml of water.
  • For other products like ghee or butter, water is not required
  • Add a few drops of tincture of iodine (like betadine soln.)
  • The solution will turn blue after cooling if the milk is adulterated.
